You, Bridget, and Rosa follow, the hairpin in tow. In the front
hallway, Nurse Johnson begins to write. She reaches one specific name
that seems to jump out at her.
"Esmerelda Stevens," she says. "I know that girl...as
Chris says, she's no end of trouble. She rooms with a girl named
Chelsea Perkins--they're Ms. Fishburn's pets and they're always up to
something. Could this hairpin be hers?"
"I'd bet money on that if I had any," you say. Rosa and
Bridget agree.
"OK, so now what?" Bridget says.
"I will return this to her," Nurse Johnson says, holding out
the hairpin, "but I will not question her yet. I want Bridget to
investigate the kitchen and dining hall and speak to Mrs. Kent. Rosa,
my husband plans to disguise himself as one of the servants so he can
do some sleuthing of his own...you're a drama whiz...please help him
with that. Maria, you come with me to the infirmary...I think I may
know something else."
"There's a list of all the school's students in the front
hallway," says Nurse Johnson. "We'll write down all the
girls whose last names begin with "S", and then narrow the
field a little."
