Just then, you hear what sounds like breaking glass. A-ha! Someone
else is here...but who? You turn to follow the sound, but before you
can even take a step, you hear Miss Cannon the science teacher, who
already appears to be in a panic, demand,
"Maria McConnell, why are you still in the building?"
You say...
A snake, huh? you think. Well, we'll just see about that. As a
precaution, however, you go to the infirmary, get a pair of latex
gloves, and put them on to protect your hands, leaving a note for
Nurse Johnson explaining that you borrowed the gloves and explaining
exactly why. Then you go to the main hall. You look, but find no
snake. Assuming that it may have slithered out, you then investigate
several rooms nearby, all with futile results. Then it hits you--you
were right. There is no snake in the school, and if there were, the
staff would have to turn the building upside down to find it. This was
a scare tactic to get the school evacuated--but why?
