Look at the book
It reads: "June 26, Good Gosh, Kai is gone! When I awoke this
morning, she was gone from her bed and nowhere to be found! I
immediately informed Mother and Father, and we set out on a search for
her. But we were unsuccessful in our quest. I fear my sister may be
gone forever."

You flip to the latest entry.
"July 2, Oh, today is a joyous day indeed! Kai has been found! I
found her in a alley en route to the village shop. It looks like she
may have encountered some of the ogres, since she was hit on the head
by a club. But Mother, Father and I are ecstatic nonetheless. We had
just about given up hope. Mother plans to prepare a big feast in order
to celebrate."
Suddenly, you hear a door open. You quickly slip the book back under
the matress as the boy returns to the room.
"Kai, how are you feeling?" he asks eagerly.
So you are Kai! What do you tell the boy?
You take the book from beneath the matress and open it to a few pages
before the last entry.
