I was confused by the sound of thumping in the distance. A gray fog
swirled about me and it took me a second to realize I was NOT back
home in Connecticut. The room I had entered led to another place,
another time. I didn't have time to rationalize, I only had time to
throw my body face first into the nearest shelter, which I quickly
realized was a trench of some kind. I was horrifed to find myself
face-to-face with a another soldier, a very dead soldier. He was
clutching at his stomache, his eyes wide open but unseeing. By the
distinctive helmet lying next to him I knew I had traveled back in
time to a WWI battlefield. I started to choke, and then the horrifying
realization hit me, the grey mist swirling above was mustard gas and I
didn't have a gas mask....
