When you get to the lab, you ask the technician to use the microscope.
Of course he laughs at you smugly. Technicians are always so smug.
They think because they are in charge of the equipment, they own the
case. But they're not the ones solving it. You are.
The technician takes the earring and looks at it under the low power
microscope.
"The backing seems to have some writing on it," says the
technician.
"Oh really. I never noticed that," you say sarcastically.
"It's a serial number. 1356672." You write down the serial
number and run out of the lab without saying a word to the technician.
"Well you're welcome!" He says.
You head over to Marshall's to find out about the serial number. Maybe
they can tell you whose ring it is. You explain that you need to know
whose earring it is. You read her the serial number and she types it
into the computer.
"It was bought by a Mr. Klockmon." You stand there in shock.
Why would Mr. Klockmon steal his own diamond?
You see that there is a tiny engraving on the backing of the earring.
It's too small to read so you decide to take it to the lab and look at
it under a microscope.
