A maid appears. "You rang, milady?"
"Yes," you say, "but you don't have to call me that.
Listen, do you have any medicine around here, and maybe something for
me to eat?"
"Ah. Of course," the maid says. She leaves and returns with
a tray. It contains what looks like French toast, orange juice, and an
egg, as well as a flask of yellowish liquid. The maid points to the
flask.
"Drink that first; it's for your headache. If you need to, you
can use the orange juice to get the taste out of your mouth."
You do so, wincing as the bitter liquid burns your throat. "Thank
you," you say, biting into the toast. Ah...heaven.
"Would you feel up to getting dressed today?" the maid asks.
"I think so," you say. "Yes, I'd like that."
The maid nods. "Yes. Well, finish your breakfast--go slowly, you
nearly starved by all accounts. I'll be back up with a uniform for
you."
"Uniform?"
"Yes--this is your school. Double-Edged Sword Academy. You're
training as a courtier to serve under our king, Eljeshanai.
Here..." She indicates the envelope. "Read that--it's from
Ms. Stuart and will explain everything."
When the maid is gone, you open the envelope. The contents explain
that you are a courtier-in-training for the perfectly just, but
perfectly merciful, King, Eljeshanai of Zijernia. You will soon be
given an assignment that will test your courage and integrity and
bring light to your gifts. But, the letter warns, you must always use
the name Meg, because your real name is actually Mairead Marguerite,
Lady of Lachlan, and if you use it, you may be killed.
You're not sure how to take this news. Being a courtier sounds cool,
but being a wanted woman holds no appeal. So
you...
You're curious about the envelope, but your head and stomach won't
shut up, so you ring the bell. You can play sleuth later.
