"Who would wish to kill me?" you ask hesitantly.
Ms. Stuart and Mrs. Cabot trade should-we-tell-her looks before Ms.
Stuart comes to sit on your bed.
"There is a specific group," she says, "that work for
Lord Belmurdran, the sworn enemy of Eljeshanai across the eastern
border. He has tried to usurp our king many a time. The men and women
who work for him are involved in manipulation, sorcery, and all forms
of treachery. The marauders who killed your parents are of his
ilk."
"But why me? OK, so I'm the Lady of Lachlan--big deal. If he
wanted to kill a noblewoman, I'm sure he could have his choice of any
in this province."
But the two women shake their heads. "If you cannot
remember," Mrs. Cabot says, "it's best not to tell you
now."
"But I..."
"Meg, please," Ms. Stuart says. "Right now, you need to
get your strength back. We'll work out this memory mess later. When
you're back on your feet, perhaps our library or hall of records will
have something that can help you."
You aren't happy with her decision, but figure that if she's a
teacher, you better do what she says. You spend the next few days
slowly improving under Mrs. Cabot and Ms. Stuart's ministrations.
After awhile, you are ready to begin your studies, and are thrilled to
learn you're a great student of Eljeshanai. When you have a free
moment, though, you know you have to try to recover your memory.
Ms. Stuart mentioned the library and the hall of records. Where do you
go first?
Your heart tells you to faint or scream, but you remember just in time
to be reasonable. Besides, if you ask for information, you might be
able to learn more about who you are.
