The two warriors silently exchange glances. The hoof beats pass the
stone building. You feel the tension in the air begin to ease up.
The swords man exhales. And looks over to the archer.
The hoof beats stop!
Slowly you hear the horses start to back track.
The fighter whispers, "Take out the last one at forty
paces."
The other nods. Seconds pass, time now measured in heart beats as the
two men wait to take on the eight approaching riders. The bowman
holds his breath, his hand easily aiming his crossbow. His head is
down as he sites, slowly pressing the trigger.
Piiitwang!!!! "Eeeeeeeeaaaaaa!!!" Thud!
You hear commands being yelled outside in a language you do not
understand. The bowman already notched his second bolt. He lets it
fly. A second of the riders goes down with a shreak and a thud.
The swardsman draws both swords at once and barges out the door.
Piiitwang!! Three down. With both swords slashing you catch a glimps
of the fighter out the swinging doors, fighting against...
"What are those?" you wonder. Then you get a glimps of one
as it takes a swip at the swordsman. "Lizard men," you
breath.
Just then an shatters the window and sinks into the wall two feet from
the bowman's head. Then another arrow smashes into the glass pitchers
above the bar showering you with broken glass. The next arrow takes
the bownam in the shoulder with a force that knocks the man back into
the wall. He looses grip on his crossbow and it comes skittering
across the floor and hits the table closest to bar with a thud. It is
just a pace away!
Stay crouched hiding behind the bar to watch the events unfold. The
horses hoofs now beat the cobble stone road, but there is no ringing
sound. "Unshod horses," you realize.
