"No," he says. "That picture wasn't on the wall when we
came up the stairs. And that dog wasn't lying there at the top of the
staircase. And look - the cord has disappeared!" What could be
happening? Then you hear the voice of a young child yelling up the
stairs.
"I'm coming!" the child's voice cries. "I've counted to
a hundred, now I'm going to find you!" Footsteps patter up the
staircase.
"Run!" Dave whispers.
"No," you say. "Maybe this kid can tell us what's going
on!"
You crane your neck to see the end of the cord, but it is lost in all
the corners and turns of the ancient hallway. "Come on,
Dave," you say, "I have to find the end to this cord!"
Reluctantly, he follows you. You follow the scarlet cord for what
seems like days, then suddenly, you spot the staircase that you came
up. "What?" you cry. "We've been going in a huge
circle!" Then Dave clenches your arm.
