Jake poked his nose out from under the covers and with eyes wide
open, saw the light of day that the pin-hole allowed in. Never was he
so happy to see morning. He was ready to leap out of bed and begin
his farming chores and mull over in his mind the horrible ordeal he
had just been through in his dream world.
"But it felt so real," Jake told himself. "It was
only a DREAM," he bantered back to himself. He had met the
master of doom -- Edgar Allan Poe. And, Poe placed Jake right in the
middle of his stories, to actually be able to live and feel the fright
and horror first hand. He WAS the madman in A Tell-Tale Heart. He
came so close to being split right open in The Pit and the Pendulum.
He was horrified in The Fall of the House of Usher.
Yes, all of the Poe stories Miss West read to his class had become
his darkest nightmare. . .
