The wood grows darker here. The grass is black, and in some spots
burned to the ground, which is rather muddy. You lift up your boots to
keep from trampling through the messy stuff. The trees are dark, with
no leaves, the bark black as charcoal. You look up and the sky is
black, but you cannot see any stars. The wind blows coldly, bitterly
here. A faint amber mist swirls about your face, and you shiver and
chafe your hands together to keep them warm.
You come to an opening in the woods, a little spot of burned grass,
charcoal trees, and thick amber mist. In the center of the opening
lies a deep yellow pool covered black, thick mosses. At the sight of
it you unvoluntarily shudder and turn away your head.
"Let's go," says Edomiya brightly. You look at him in
wonder. How could he be so happy in such a place as this?
"Where to?" you ask. A misty wisp of amber curls past your
face and seems to whisper, "Don't go! Don't go!" Or maybe it
was your imagination. You shake your head to clear your mind.
Edomiya does not answer, but stares at the pool. You look at it too,
and see nothing. "What are you looking at?" you ask
impatiently. "Didn't you hear me before?" You tap your foot,
irritated.
Edomiya looks up, as one startled from a dream. "No, Adona, I
didn't--what did you say?"
"I said, where are we going to?" You sigh and look away,
disgusted with this slow creature. Or perhaps you are not disgusted,
but merely scared. A slow chill has been creeping up your spine for
many moments now, and you feel queasy because of it.
"Oh," says Edomiya lightly, "we are going into the
pool." He says it as if it were the easiest thing in the world.
You think he's just playing around, and laugh very lightly (too
lightly, you think). "Good joke," you say, smilingly.
Edomiya frowns. "It is no joke, Adona." He sounds very
serious. You frown too. "I mean it. We ARE going to jump into
this pool."
Has he lost his mind? you wonder. Why does he say such things?
A scared, frightened feeling overcomes you. You shudder and feel like
you should cry.
You decide to stay with Edomiya. You think it is a fine choice, but
why does your heart hurt so horribly? Oh well. Don't you love Edomiya?
How can you bear to leave him. You decide that this is the best
choice.
