The two girls in blue continue down the hall. You follow at a safe
distance and hear,
"I didn't think the rules could get anymore severe over there.
What's the latest crackdown?"
The second girl lowers her voice. "They're calling it
"isolation," but it's really three forms of murder. If you
get a black mark, it's punishable by being turned into ice, frozen and
hidden in a painting, or poisioning."
"No! Are you sure this isn't just a rumor cooked up by EOWA to
scare us?"
"Yes; I overheard a teacher say it. And if it's all true, then
Madrona is in serious trouble."
You duck into an alcove and try to piece this information together.
EOWA--it sounds like the initials for another school. But what sort of
school would murder its students? Also, what sort of magic is EOWA
using--because if they can turn people to ice and hide them in
paintings, magic must be afoot?
You turn the corner and find a door marked LIBRARY. Jackpot!
You slip inside the library and are faced with shelf after shelf of
books. You know some of them must contain the information you're
looking for about EOWA, so you start scanning titles. During your
perusal, you notice that three books are unmarked. One is thin and
black. One is a thick royal purple one with gold-edged pages. One is
brown with a cream-colored bookmark.
Which one will you open first?
You may not have a memory, but something in the back of your mind lets
you know that you were--are--a highly intelligent girl with a knack
for solving mysteries. This in mind, you decide to keep eavesdropping,
in hopes that the next thing someone says will not only clear up the
whole conversation about the mysterious Madrona, but also help you
figure out who you are.
